Calculating new coordinates based on bearing and distance of current position...

Postby Sigmatic » Sun Apr 22, 2012 4:33 am

Hello all,

I hope there is someone out there that can help me with the following problem...

Here is what I have:
.... the latitude and longitude for a given position "A" on earth.

Here is what I need:
.... the formula that will give me the latitude and longitude for a new position "B" that is located on a given bearing and distance from position "A".

Example:
.... position "A" is located at N10 40.5 - E120 20.0. Position "B" is located on a bearing of 060 degrees and a distance of 20 nautical miles from position "A". What would be the coordinates for position "B"?

Thank you so much for your time ...

Hi,
I'm afraid I haven't ever done this kind of calculations. The best I can do for you is to guide you to the sources where I would start getting guidance on how to do it. Perhaps these sources can help you, too:

If I helped you, award points, plenty of them.
If I bored you, deduct points for being too long-winded. (I know, :lol)

Thank you Sisyphus for your input and links. All though interesting, those site do not specifically address the problem as such.

In the mean time however I have done some more research and eventually did find a website that answers the question. I've tried the formulas and indeed come up with the correct answer when calculating the lat/lon for the new posiion based on a distance and bearing from a starting point.

Here's the link for those who were looking for the same:
