inserting chart from excel data worksheet in powerpoint 2010

When I insert chart on slide in powerpoint 2010 the excel worksheet opens in a new window instead of being tiled side by side next to the chart. At one time the chart and worksheet were tiled next to each other but I must have done something as for the past week I cannot get them tiled side by side...Has anyone any ideas as to what I may have done please. From reading up on charts they should be tiled side by side in all the examples shown but I cannot find any example of getting them back to this state . It is happening all the time on all new presentations that I do.
