autofilling entry in a cell

Postby Sebastian42 » Wed Feb 08, 2017 6:43 am

I set up a SS, but find that in a column with empty cells, Excel automatically inserts the (product) formula - and its result - when I type the values of the arguments into other cells - and then click on the cell where I WANT the result. It's like a mysterious magic which I would like to understand. I did put the multiplication formula in the top of the column, but I have never seen THIS kind of auto-filling before, so did not expect that pleasant surprise. Can anyone enlighten me as to how that comes about?

This sounds like you refer to "Array formulas". Look up the term in the Internet to learn more.

Have a great day! :D

I do this for "honour and country" - much less of the latter, actually.
If I helped you, award points, plenty of them.
If I bored you, deduct points for being too long-winded. (I know, :lol)

I have finally looked it up, as suggested, but while possibly useful, and certainly intriguing, it is too daunting to grapple with. Since the original example no longer behaves in the strange way I described, I will let the matter rest (unresolved).
